Many of Kenya’s safari camps and lodges are family-friendly. From dedicated children’s activities to exclusive-use villas, there are options to suit every family. Here’s our ultimate guide to family travel in Kenya.
Our favourite things to do in Kenya with kids
A family safari in Kenya can be as adventurous or relaxing as you like. A safari is a must, and private game drives allow families to explore at their own pace. Guides can tailor each experience to suit different ages and interests.
For older children and teenagers, activities such as hot air balloon safaris and walking safaris add an extra sense of adventure. Many safari destinations also offer community visits, giving families the chance to learn about local cultures and traditions.
Beyond safari, the Kenyan coast and the Lamu Archipelago offer the perfect family escape. Spend your days snorkelling, sailing, kitesurfing or simply relaxing on pristine beaches.
The best places to visit on a family safari in Kenya
Kenya is home to some of Africa’s most iconic safari destinations, as well as lesser-known gems that are perfect for families. Each destination offers unique wildlife, activities and experiences. For the ultimate family safari in Kenya, we recommend combining two or more destinations in a single itinerary.
Maasai Mara
Best for all ages
The Maasai Mara is Kenya’s most iconic safari destination and one of the best places for a family safari in Kenya. The reserve is known for its exceptional wildlife viewing and offers excellent opportunities to spot the Big Five – lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos and buffalo. For a quieter experience, we recommend visiting outside the peak migration season of July and August.
Families can enjoy private game drives tailored to their interests and pace. Days can be spent exploring the plains, enjoying bush picnics, relaxing by the pool or joining guided nature walks designed for younger explorers.

Laikipia
Best for adventure and rare wildlife
Located in central Kenya, Laikipia offers a quieter and more exclusive safari experience. The region is ideal for active families, with activities such as horseback riding, mountain biking and guided bush walks.
Laikipia is also home to some of East Africa’s rarest wildlife, including rhinos, Grévy’s zebras, African wild dogs, black leopards and reticulated giraffes. Families can also visit the private Lewa Wildlife Conservancy to learn about conservation efforts while enjoying a stay at the beautiful andBeyond Suyian Lodge.

Samburu
Best for authentic cultural experiences
Samburu National Reserve is an excellent choice for families looking to combine wildlife and culture. Its dramatic landscapes are home to elephants, big cats, ostriches, antelopes and many other species that can be spotted on family-friendly game drives.
Older children and teenagers can enjoy guided hikes, nature walks and excursions to Mount Ololokwe, one of northern Kenya’s most striking landmarks. Families can also take part in cultural experiences with local communities, learning traditional skills such as tracking, spear throwing, archery and beadwork from Samburu guides.

Amboseli
Best for families with young children
Amboseli National Park is one of the best places in Kenya to see elephants. Frequent wildlife sightings keep younger children engaged, while the park’s compact size allows families to balance game drives with relaxation back at camp.
Many family-friendly lodges in Amboseli offer activities designed for younger guests. Children can enjoy nature walks, arts and crafts, photography sessions and evenings around the campfire roasting marshmallows. Well-equipped games rooms and spacious family suites make Amboseli an excellent choice for families travelling with young children.

Tips for travelling to Kenya with children
Many safari camps and lodges in Kenya welcome children of all ages, but we generally recommend travelling with children aged five and above so they can enjoy more activities and enjoy the safari experience more fully.
Older children and teenagers can take part in activities such as walking safaris, which often have a minimum age requirement of 12 years. To keep everyone engaged, we recommend combining different destinations and experiences throughout your trip.
For most families, a 10-day itinerary offers the ideal balance. Combining destinations such as the Maasai Mara and Laikipia allows families to enjoy diverse wildlife, landscapes and activities.
Travel between safari destinations often involves short light aircraft flights. To make the most of your journey, we suggest spending at least three or four nights in each location. Larger families may also prefer private charter flights for added convenience and flexibility.
The best time for family travel in Kenya
The best time to visit Kenya with your family is during the dry seasons, from January to February or June to October. These months offer excellent wildlife viewing and comfortable safari conditions.
July and August coincide with the Great Migration river crossings in the Maasai Mara. As a result, this is the busiest time of year. Families looking for a quieter experience may prefer to travel outside these months or explore lesser-known safari destinations.
September, October and December are generally quieter and still offer great wildlife viewing. We recommend avoiding April and May, as heavy rains can disrupt safari activities and some camps may close for the season.
